Clothing That Pleases God - 3 By Glen Young Who wears the pants at your house? This question is not necessarily asking what kind of clothing the husband or the wife wears. It is a question of who is in subjection to whom. The force of the question comes from our acceptance of the difference between men and women's clothing. We think in terms of men wearing pants and women wearing dresses. Have you noticed that in our present society there is an effort to blur the distinction between the sexes? The feminist agenda demands that women be treated as men. If a women wants to be like a man in the way she acts and dresses, they applaud. I remember hearing a feminist argue that society had placed women in the role of child bearing and mothering. My initial reaction was, this woman has a Ph.D. and she doesn't understand that the woman's body places her in that role, not society! On another occasion, I was to perform a wedding ceremony. I always spend time with the couple going over their responsibilities as husbands and wives. I usually lead into the discussion by going over the vows they will be taking. When I got to the woman's vow where she was to say 'honor and obey,' the woman refused to repeat this portion of the vows. As she sat there in her tight blue-jeans, she affirmed that she would never submit to any man. With the advent of openly avowed homosexuality, we see women wearing clothing that shouts, 'Look at me, I want to be a man.' We have all seen them, with their bobbed-off hair, masculine appearance and lesbian ways. Now, I am not saying that every woman who puts on a pair of blue-jeans is a lesbian. I am asking, why would a Christian woman who professes godliness want to look like one? God made men and women different (Genesis 2:7, 21-22). God gave men and women different roles in life (Genesis 3:16-19). Throughout the history of man, God has demanded that the distinction He created between man and woman, be maintained. Men are to be head over women (1 Corinthians 11:3). Wives are to be in subjection to their husbands (Ephesians 5:22-23). In religion, women are to be silent in the church (1 Corinthians 14:34-35). Men are to serve as elders in the church (1 Timothy 3:1-7). Remember, clothing reflects upon the character of the wearer. The harlot's attire (Proverbs 7:10) says look at me I am a harlot. Priests were identified by their apparel (Ezra 3:10). Kings were identified by their garments (Esther 6:8). Virgins and brides were identified by what they wore (Jeremiah 2:32). You ARE identified by what you WEAR (1 Timothy 2:9-10)! I realize that I have pointed out some things in this article which will not bode well with some. I don't ask you to accept what I have said carte blanche. I do ask that you give consideration to what I have written. I don't have a problem with wearing clothing that is culturally acceptable. I do have a problem with Christians who wear clothing without giving any thought to what their choice says about them. The next time you make the choice of what you shall wear, ask yourself the question, 'Is this clothing that pleases God?'
